Magic lantern show in Occi
A unique show is coming to the Occidental area on Friday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.. Orlov’s Magic Lantern Experience is a one and half hour showing of hand colored glass lantern slides. The slides were made by Occidental ceramic artist Barbara Hoffman’s grandfather on a 1917 trip to Russia during the Bolshevik Revolution and during a winter journey on the Trans Siberian Railway. Anton Orlov has converted a bus into a film photo shop.
To make a reservation call 874-2787. The cost is $10. Those who come early at 6:30 can have a tour of the bus.
Since 17th century the Magic Lantern was among the primary means of communication and a major source for entertainment and learning. The demise of the Magic Lantern came only in the mid-20th century and now its rich visual history lies virtually forgotten, yet it remains an important piece of the progression of technology and our history.
