Bike path on the to do list

Friday, January 25th, 2013 | Posted by

We have received an inquiry from Dan Conley asking when the county will begin construction on the Bodega Bay bike path/trail/boardwalk. We will be looking into this in the near future.

Some 25 years ago this was proposed and a lot of people supported it because Highway 1 is very dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists in Bodega Bay. At that time it was shot down because of environmental impacts on the harbor tidelands that could damage marine resources.

    Hi Dan,

Sonoma County Regional Parks is working hard on making this trail a reality. Like many complicated trail projects, such as the Joe Rodota Trail, it is being developed in phases as funding becomes available. Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition has been working hard with Supervisor Carrillo and Regional Parks Staff to make this project a reality. While it’s true that environmental clearances are still needed for the boardwalk, this does not seem to be a deal killer. Contact Ken Tam (565-3348) at Regional Parks for the current status of the project.

I have been involved with the Bodega Bay Bike/Pedestrian Project since 2000. It has been a long, slow process. There have been meetings with county officials and Cal Trans. A trail plan has been developed. We are anxious to see the project move forward. The main focus of the project needs to be from the Bodega Bay Community Center, south, to Smith Brothers Road. There is a group of citizens in Bodega Bay who are ready to work to make this a reality. There is support for a safe path through the town.
