RG III fined $10,000 over apparel

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has been fined $10,000 by the NFL for wearing unauthorized apparel, a T-shirt with "Operation Patience" on it.

Griffin wore the shirt on the field before Washington's exhibition game Monday night against Pittsburgh. NFL spokesman Randall Liu confirmed the fine on Thursday.

All gear worn on game days must be approved by the league.

Griffin drew a $10,000 fine last year when he wore unauthorized material to a postgame news conference.

QB SMITH GETS START FOR JETS

The New York Jets finally made a quarterback decision - for Saturday night's game.

A day after Rex Ryan said he wasn't ready to name a starter for their third preseason game against the Giants, he finally delivered the expected news that Geno Smith will get live first-team reps for the first time.Mark Sanchez also will play, but the team hasn't determined how to divvy up playing time.

VETERAN GETS 'BELL-RINGING'

Redskins linebacker London Fletcher says he gets a "bell-ringing'' about a couple of times a game.

Fletcher said Thursday he doesn't classify the hits as concussions. He says: "You'll see stars for a second, and then you're back to normal in two, three seconds, whatever the case may be. That's just the way the game is.'' Fletcher also talked about a concussion he kept secret from reporters during preseason last year.
