“Vira, the only California Mermaid” EVENT CANCELLED
Unfortunately, the Mermaidfest HAS BEEN CANCELLED as of last night. Vira apologizes, but says her weatherman has predicated STORMY WEATHER for Sunday. Featuring “Vira, the only California mermaid,” Mermaidfest 2010 will be held on Sunday, October 24th from 11:00am – 7:00pm in the Monte Rio Amphitheatre.
A donation of $5 is asked of all adults attending. Children under 12 are free.
The event benefits the Community Clean Water Institute. (See www.ccwi.org)
Since 1998, the festival has sought to bring attention to the need to support marine life, ecology, and stream restoration, and an awareness of the problems facing local commercial fishermen on the coast.
The festival combines fun and environmental education for all.
Its founder is “Vira” Burgerman of Bodega, well-known for her appearances in full mermaid costume at the Bodega Bay Fisherman’s Festival and other events.
All crafts and arts booths feature Sonoma county vendors and exhibitors only, in an effort to support local commerce. Food booths include grilled local seafood and wine and beer tasting.
For children, there will be face painting and “merminnow tail making.”
The Amphitheatre, set amongst redwood trees, will feature live music all day. Visitors should bring chairs and blankets to sit on and layers of clothing.
From Bodega Bay, take Highway One north and turn right on Highway 116 (River Road). Monte Rio is about 7 ½ miles east. Follow the signs to the festival.
